constantia, cape town. how can we help?

Power is a test of character. Success is also a te Power is a test of character. Success is also a test of character. When I fail and even when I don’t succeed (these aren’t exactly the same), I remain humble or I am humbled (these aren’t exactly the same). But when I do really well, when I am being admired and held up as an example to follow, my character is tested. Rudyard Kipling described both success and failure as imposters. He was correct. When my motor car allows me to feel brave and enraged and aggressive, I have a poor sense of self. Similarly, when the dog snarls and strains against the leash as if it is a savage beast, it has a poor sense of self. When I am successful, I could have a poor sense of self. I might not be as good as people think I am. I might not have succeeded for the reasons I think nor to the extent I ought to have succeeded. Oh what a morally brittle and compromised bunch we are! How much we need the convicting of the Holy Spirit and the moderating effects of meaningful community, also called fellowship. If I remain in my little bubble, I become less of a Christian. I let myself down. But when I connect with others, when I am encouraged by others and when I am rebuked in some gentle and indirect way by my various human interactions, I become more of what God had in mind when He weaved my DNA spirals. Being in meaningful fellowship produces the best version of me.

“And we know that in all things God works for th “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.”

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What appeals Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
What appeals to one person won’t necessarily appeal to everyone.

Elke pot het sy deksel.

Beauty might be culturally determined. Why is one body shape made the ideal? Perhaps I was born in the wrong century or on the wrong continent. During the Renaissance, soft, full-bodied shapes were the height of beauty. They spoke of health, prosperity, and abundance. Thinness meant poverty, neglect, and illness. A skinny wife meant a stingy husband. Nowadays, the desired look tends toward the androgynous. Thin and sinewy is desirable. The beautiful clothes are modelled by one kind of body. Have you ever seen a portly mannequin in Woolworths? There, I rest my case!

But that’s not the whole truth. In Revelation, one church is rebuked for thinking they had it all together. Jesus advises them to get eye medicine so they could see properly. They were suffering from I strain. Beauty is seen by those equipped to see beauty. I may look at the heavens and see little. But one who has studied the heavens is filled with wonder. That I see little is not a commentary on the heavens - it’s a commentary on me.

Treasures were stolen from the Louvre last week. The thieves will break the jewels apart and sell them for cash. They didn’t see beauty, only dollars. Our eyes can become depraved. What is ugly can appear beautiful.

Think of Isaiah 53: Who would have thought that God’s saving power would look like this? There was nothing attractive about Him, nothing to cause a second look. Many walked right past Jesus and didn’t notice. That was a commentary on them, not on Him. Others saw Him and were drawn to Him. “I fell in love with the Nazarene,” the old song said. Alexander Pope once wrote, “The water saw its master and blushed itself into wine.” The water recognised Jesus.

I don’t want to walk past the presence of Jesus because I haven’t fitted myself to recognise His beauty.

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. - Phil 3:13-14
