Let’s give him a warm welcome! ❤️

In group dynamics you learn about “in" and “ou In group dynamics you learn about “in" and “out". Some feel at home in a group and some feel out. People will go to lengths to feel accepted. They will even do things that are contrary to their nature and their morality in order to feel accepted. This is, I’m told, the power of a gang. It’s about feeling accepted by a group of people.

To feel like you’re not part of the “club” is horrible. No one wants that. Church must never be a club - where you dress, talk, or act a certain way just to blend in. It shouldn’t be a place where some feel like outsiders, unsure of the language, the culture, or the unspoken rules.

To not feel a part of the ”club” is horrible. Nobody wants that. Church must never be a “club” where you look and speak so as to fit in. It must never be a place where some people feel on the outskirts. It mustn’t be a place where you talk in a certain way, use christian clichès, dress in a certain way all in order to blend in.

In church life there have been times when I have felt the need to assert my individuality. It’s not a comfortable place to be. This is a nuanced thing I am speaking about. I’m not advocating being a contrarian. I am not saying that it’s okay to always be out of step. I’m not giving you permission to go and sit in the car until the singing stops because you don’t enjoy the songs. I am speaking about the pressure to conform.

I hope TPC never feels “clubby.”

So what am I saying? Should I pursue inclusion or should I say I don’t want to be a part of a club and will reconcile with being an outsider. In a nutshell, you need to belong and feel the strengthening and comfort belonging brings. However you need to be willing to stand alone when required. You have to resist pressure that is purely social. HMM? Life can be so complex. And be certain of this: People are important and you matter. We don’t want you to feel out.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.””

It turns out that the one who has ascended into po It turns out that the one who has ascended into power is not transcendent in remoteness, is not splendid in indifference, but is deeply in touch with the reality of the earth where money and power and social leverage and differentiation of gender, race, and class leave some dangerously exposed. This father-God to whom we pray “our father” rides the clouds not as a joy-rider, but rather to be in a position to see and to know and to care and to intervene and to feed and to heal and to forgive and to reconcile and to liberate. It turns out that ascension, whereby God is celebrated in power, is a claim that the earth is ordered differently because of the one who governs it.

The antithesis of individualism and self-love. I belong to the Body, I belong to you. I’m a gift to you and you to me. “Because you are, I am” (quote from the movie BEAUTIFUL MIND). I join, I commit

We see a church that understands how God designed the church. So we see a church with people who value unity, loyalty, solving interpersonal issues, and serving the greater good, which is what is good for our local church. Not ‘me’, but ‘us’.

Christianity has never been a faith that involves just me and Jesus.
